Monday’s Musical Assembly with jazz piano teacher Mr Joe Thompson

by Music at King Edward's School, Birmingham

On Monday 8th November, our visiting jazz piano teacher and ex-KES pupil, Mr Joe Thompson, gave an assembly to all boys in Shells, Removes and Upper Middles.

Along with Fifths pupils Daniel Gooding and James Gooding on drums and bass respectively, Mr Thompson played some examples of well-known tunes in different styles. He also explained what the concept of harmony was, by transitioning between songs with different genres seamlessly due to their similar harmonic structures.

The overarching message of the assembly addressed the importance of exploring new avenues and to have the courage to try new things; not just in music, but in life in general.

Mr Thompson comes into school to teach jazz piano every Monday. Please do get in touch with the Music Department if your son would like to have lessons.
